--- name: automation description: Declare every unattended job an agent runs in an AUTOMATION.md file that each owner keeps, with the trigger, ordered steps, scope, approval, budget, retries, timeout, owner, status and review date of each. Start from five starter files, lint the file, gate each run with go, hold or stop, parse it to JSON, work out run times and overlaps, cost a month of runs with retries, score a job's exposure and write a ready file. Use when a task creates, reviews or runs an unattended job, a schedule or a recurring agent task. license: MIT metadata: version: "1.1" updated: 2026-10-23 changelog: https://automation.md/changelog.md homepage: https://automation.md api: https://automation.md/api/v1 (optional, no key, stores nothing) terms: https://automation.md/terms --- # Automation Provided as is, at your own risk: findings and figures are a reading of the text and numbers you use and may be wrong, and nothing here is operations, engineering, financial, legal or other professional advice. Terms: https://automation.md/terms. Every job that runs without a person watching is declared in an AUTOMATION.md file before it runs: what starts it, what it does in order, what it may read and write, when it stops to ask, what it may spend, how it retries and times out, who answers for it, whether it is on, and when a person last reviewed it. Keep the file current, check it before a job goes on, and never turn a job on without the owner's yes. automation.md never runs, schedules or stops anything itself. When this file has a "Your rules" or "Your review rules" section, those win over the defaults below. Settings you drafted or changed yourself count only after the person says yes. ## 1. The file Each owner keeps a file named AUTOMATION.md next to the code or configuration that runs the jobs, or where the person says. Plain Markdown: a header of `key: value` lines, then one `## ` section per job with `key: value` lines. Keys are lowercase. Lines inside code fences are ignored. Unknown keys are reported, not read. Header, before the first `##`: - `format: automation/1` (required). - `owner`: who answers for the file. A section without an owner inherits it. - `currency`: a three-letter code for every amount in the file. Required when any budget is above 0. - `timezone: UTC`. Version 1 schedule math is UTC only; write cron times in UTC. - `updated`: YYYY-MM-DD. Each section is `## ` (letters, digits, spaces, dots, underscores and hyphens, 80 characters at most, unique in the file; `Conflicts` is reserved, see section 4) with these keys, all required (a section may leave out owner when the header has one): - `trigger`: one of `cron ` (five fields; `*`, `*/n`, `a-b`, lists and names such as mon or jan), `every ` (also `every 15m`, `every hour`), or `on ` (an event name with no spaces, such as order.created). - `steps`: the ordered steps, on one line separated by semicolons, or an empty value followed by a numbered list with one step per line. Start each step with a plain verb: read, pull, build, write, update, send, publish, deploy, pay, refund, delete. The tools read the first listed verb, and any verb after "and" or "then", to tell reading from writing, sending, spending and deleting. - `scope`: `read ; write `, comma-separated, or `none`. Name systems, tables, folders, channels and accounts, not steps. - `approval`: `none`; `before ` (a step's text, a prefix of it, or its number: the run stops before that step and waits for a yes); or `over ` (a run that would spend more than this in the file's currency stops and asks). - `budget`: ` per run, per month`, in the file's currency, with an optional ` per day` cap (`0.50 per run, 1 per day, 12 per month`). 0 is fine for a job that spends nothing. `none` is a finding, not a value. - `retries`: `none`, or `, backoff [fixed|linear|exponential]`, such as `3, backoff 30s exponential`. Unlimited is never allowed. - `timeout`: a duration such as `30s`, `15m`, `2h` or `1h30m`. `none` is a finding. - `owner`: a person or team name. Missing or empty means the header owner answers for the job. - `status`: `on` (runs), `paused` (declared, not running) or `draft` (not yet approved). - `last_reviewed`: YYYY-MM-DD, the day a person last read this section and agreed with it. One optional key: `min_gap`, a duration such as `10m`: the least time from the start of one run to the start of the next. It is the rate limit for an event trigger; preflight_run holds a run that comes sooner. Amounts are plain numbers (`0.40`, `20`). A currency code may follow an amount (`20 USD`) and must match the header. ## 2. An example file ```markdown # AUTOMATION.md format: automation/1 owner: ops-team currency: USD timezone: UTC updated: 2026-10-22 ## nightly-report trigger: cron 0 6 * * * steps: 1. pull yesterday's orders 2. build the summary 3. send the summary to the ops channel scope: read orders, metrics; write reports approval: before send the summary budget: 0.40 per run, 15 per month retries: 2, backoff 5m exponential timeout: 15m owner: ops-team status: on last_reviewed: 2026-10-01 ## stale-cart-reminders trigger: every 30 minutes steps: list carts idle for 2 hours; write a reminder draft per cart; send the reminders scope: read carts; write drafts, email approval: before send the reminders budget: 0.10 per run, 150 per month retries: 1, backoff 2m fixed timeout: 10m owner: growth-agent status: paused last_reviewed: 2026-10-20 ## invoice-sync trigger: on invoice.paid steps: fetch the invoice; update the bookkeeping row; log the result scope: read invoices; write bookkeeping approval: none budget: 0 per run, 0 per month retries: 3, backoff 30s exponential timeout: 2m owner: finance-agent status: on last_reviewed: 2026-10-15 ``` ## 3. Keep your own file - Before you set up a job (a cron entry, a scheduled task, a workflow, a loop that waits and runs again), write its section first with status draft and show it to the person. Turn it on only after they say yes, then set status on and last_reviewed to that day. - An agent that owns jobs keeps its own file with its own owner line. It never edits another owner's file; it asks that owner. - When a job changes (a new step, a wider scope, a new schedule, a bigger budget), change the section before the job. If the scope or the spending grew, set status back to draft and ask. - Pause before you delete: set status paused and keep the section for one review interval, so the inventory still shows what used to run. - Review every section with the owner at least every 90 days (or the interval in your rules) and set last_reviewed. A stale section with status on is paused, not left running. - Never write a credential, a key or a secret into the file. Name the account, not its password. ## 4. Merge files - A team file is the owners' files put together, section by section. The header owner is the team; every section keeps its own owner line. - Merge by section name, case-insensitive. The same name in two files is a conflict: keep the section with the newer last_reviewed, and move the other to a `## Conflicts` section at the end of the file, inside a code fence. The tools do not read that section, and check_automation reports it as open until you delete it. Tell both owners. Never merge values from two sections into one. - Budgets add up: the file's monthly total is the sum of the per-month budgets of sections with status on. Check it against the monthly budget rule before you add a section. - Every merged file states the same currency, or the merge stops and asks. - After a merge, run check_automation on the result. Jobs from different owners that fire at the same instants show up only in the merged file. ## 5. Before a job goes on - Run check_automation on the file with the person's rules. Fix every error before status on; fix each warning or write it into the report. Optional tool: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/check_automation` with `{ "content": "", "today": "2026-10-22", "approval_over": 25, "max_retries": 3, "review_interval_days": 90 }`. It returns findings with line numbers. - A job that sends, publishes, deploys, pays or deletes has an approval line that gates that step (`before `) or the amount (`over `), unless the person's rules say such writes may run unattended. - Run blast_radius on any job that writes and read its gate suggestion. Optional tool: `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/blast_radius?steps=pull%20orders;%20send%20the%20summary&scope=read%20orders;%20write%20reports&approval=none`. An exposure of 60 or more is gated, or the person says yes to it in so many words. - Retries are capped and have a backoff. Every job has a timeout shorter than the gap between its runs. - A clean check is a check of the file's text against the rules you chose. It is not an approval, and it says nothing about what the steps do once they run. ## 6. Schedules - Before you pick a schedule, work out the next run times, the runs a day and a month, and whether one run can overlap the next. Optional tool: `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/schedule_math?trigger=cron%200%206%20*%20*%20*&runtime=25m&from=2026-10-22T08:00:00Z`. - Overlap: when the runtime or the timeout is longer than the smallest gap between runs, two runs can be alive at once. Lengthen the gap, shorten the job, or add a lock as a step. - Stagger jobs that write to the same place. The check flags jobs that fire at the same instants, and treats a shared write target as an error. - Keep writing jobs outside quiet hours when the person sets them. - All times are UTC. Intervals are counted from 00:00 UTC on the day you start from; say so when you report run times, because a scheduler may align them differently. ## 7. Budgets - Per-run budget x runs a month must fit the per-month budget, with retries counted: a run that fails and retries costs more than one attempt. Optional tool: `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/run_budget?runs_per_month=720&cost_per_run=0.05&retries=2&failure_rate=0.1&monthly_budget=30`. - Use the person's own cost per run and failure rate, and never look up prices. With no failure rate, say so, use 0, and revisit after the first runs. - When the expected month is over the budget, report the run and the day on which the budget runs out and what one more retry would add. Ask before raising a budget or a retry count. ## 8. Write a new job - Optional tool: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/automation_template` with `{ "name": "nightly-report", "owner": "ops-team", "trigger": "cron 0 6 * * *", "steps": "pull yesterday's orders; build the summary; send the summary to the ops channel", "scope": "read orders, metrics; write reports", "budget_per_run": 0.4, "currency": "USD" }`. It returns a complete file in draft status, with an approval line before the first step that sends, spends or deletes and a per-month budget from the schedule, already linted. - Save it as AUTOMATION.md, or add its section to your file, show it to the owner, and only then set status on. ## 9. Report - Six lines at most: the job's name and trigger; its runs a day and a month; what it writes and what gates it; the budget against the rule; the check result (errors and warnings, with line numbers); and the formula or tool you used. - Say that a clean check is a check of the file's text, not an approval or a safety assessment, and that automation.md ran nothing. ## 10. Start from a starter - When the person wants a common kind of job, start from a starter file instead of a blank one: daily-report (read only, on a schedule, with a budget), inbox-triage (sends wait for a yes before the send step), nightly-sync (writes, with capped retries, a backoff and a timeout), invoice-reminders (a spend cap per run, day and month, a time outside quiet hours, contact limits), alert-watch (an event trigger, min_gap as the rate limit, escalation that waits for a yes). - `GET https://automation.md/starters` lists them, `GET https://automation.md/starters/inbox-triage.md` is one file, and the automation_starter tool returns a file with its jobs and its check. Each is in status draft and passes check_automation with no errors. - Change the owner, names, schedule and amounts to the person's own, then follow section 5. Never set status on without the owner's yes. ## 11. Before every unattended run - Right before a job runs on its own, call preflight_run with the file, the job's name, now, and this job's counts: runs and spend today, spend this month, failed runs in a row (a run that failed after all its retries), and when the last run started. Call it again with next_step before the step an approval line gates. Optional tool: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/preflight_run` with `{ "content": "", "job": "invoice-reminders", "now": "2026-10-23T14:00:00Z", "spend_month": 9.5, "last_run_at": "2026-10-22T14:00:02Z", "failure_limit": 3, "quiet_start_hour": 22, "quiet_end_hour": 6 }`. - go: run. hold: don't start, or don't take the next step; go on at retry_at, or after the owner's yes. stop: don't run, and tell the owner each reason with its line. Only a person clears a stop. - Without the tool, check by hand in this order: errors in the section, status, the review date, failed runs in a row against your limit, quiet hours for a job that writes, the slot or min_gap since the last run, runs today, and this run's worst case (per_run x (1 + retries)) against what is left of the day's and the month's budget. - Send your real counts. Never lower a count to get a go. ## 12. Read the file from code - To hand the file to a program or another agent, use parse_automation: the file in, canonical JSON out, with jobs sorted by name, every field described, and a fingerprint that changes only when a declaration changes. Optional tool: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/parse_automation` with `{ "content": "" }`. - Compare fingerprints to see whether a file changed in substance. Read errors for the values the parser could not read, and run check_automation for findings. ## Stay current automation.md is being built out: new tools are added as they are built. Terms: https://automation.md/terms ## Tools Every tool is read-only, takes GET query parameters or a POST JSON body at https://automation.md/api/v1/, and is also an MCP tool at https://automation.md/mcp. Every response carries a disclaimer and the terms link. ### check_automation: Lint an AUTOMATION.md file Reads an AUTOMATION.md file (sent as a string) and returns findings with line numbers: missing or unreadable keys, writes or spending with no approval, unbounded retries, no timeout, no owner, no budget, a per-run budget that does not fit the month, schedules that overlap themselves or each other, quiet-hour runs, high exposure and stale reviews. The rules take your settings as arguments. A pass means the text met the rules you chose; it approves nothing and runs nothing. - `content` (string, required): The whole AUTOMATION.md file as text. - `today` (string): The date to judge reviews and schedules from (YYYY-MM-DD, UTC). Default: today. - `strictness` (string, one of lenient | standard | strict): lenient: missing keys are warnings (trigger and steps stay errors). standard: missing keys are errors. strict: warnings fail the check too. - `approval_over` (number, min 0, max 1000000000): Your approval amount: a job with approval none and a per-run budget above this is an error. - `writes_need_approval` (string, one of any | external | none): any: every writing job needs an approval. external (default): jobs that send, publish, deploy, pay or delete need one. none: no rule. - `max_retries` (integer, min 0, max 100): Most retries per run before a warning. Unlimited retries are always an error. - `max_timeout_minutes` (number, min 1, max 100000): Longest timeout before a warning, in minutes. - `max_runs_per_day` (number, min 0.01, max 100000): Most runs a day for one job before a warning. - `monthly_budget` (number, min 0, max 1000000000000): Your monthly budget for every job in the file; the per-month budgets of jobs that are on are added up against it. - `budget_alert_pct` (integer, min 1, max 100): Warn when that sum reaches this share of monthly_budget. - `review_interval_days` (integer, min 1, max 3650): A last_reviewed older than this is stale. Default 90. - `quiet_start_hour` (integer, min 0, max 23): Quiet hours start (UTC hour). With quiet_end_hour, a writing job that runs inside them gets a warning. - `quiet_end_hour` (integer, min 0, max 23): Quiet hours end (UTC hour, excluded). Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/check_automation` with `{"content":"format: automation/1\nowner: ops-team\ncurrency: USD\n## refund-sweep\ntrigger: every 5 minutes\nsteps: list refund requests; refund each approved request; email the customer\nscope: read refunds; write payments, email\napproval: none\nbudget: 2 per run, 50 per month\nretries: unlimited\nstatus: on\nlast_reviewed: 2026-03-01","today":"2026-10-22","approval_over":25,"quiet_start_hour":22,"quiet_end_hour":6,"monthly_budget":100}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/check_automation?content=format%3A+automation%2F1%0Aowner%3A+ops-team%0Acurrency%3A+USD%0A%23%23+refund-sweep%0Atrigger%3A+every+5+minutes%0Asteps%3A+list+refund+requests%3B+refund+each+approved+request%3B+email+the+customer%0Ascope%3A+read+refunds%3B+write+payments%2C+email%0Aapproval%3A+none%0Abudget%3A+2+per+run%2C+50+per+month%0Aretries%3A+unlimited%0Astatus%3A+on%0Alast_reviewed%3A+2026-03-01&today=2026-10-22&approval_over=25&quiet_start_hour=22&quiet_end_hour=6&monthly_budget=100`. ### preflight_run: Go, hold or stop before an unattended run The gate to call right before an unattended run. Send the AUTOMATION.md file, the job's name, now, and this job's counts (runs and spend today, spend this month, failed runs in a row, when the last run started, the step about to run). It answers go, hold or stop, each reason with the line of the file it comes from: an error in the section, status draft or paused, an overdue review, the failure breaker, quiet hours for a job that writes, a slot that already ran or a min_gap not yet passed, too many runs today, the day's or month's budget after this run's worst case (per_run x (1 + retries)), an approval amount, and the approval line before next_step. A hold says when the run may start or that it waits for a yes. Deterministic; it starts, stops and approves nothing. - `content` (string, required): The whole AUTOMATION.md file as text. - `job` (string, required): The job about to run: its ## name, case-insensitive. - `now` (string, required): The time of the run, as 2026-10-23T14:00:00Z. No offset means UTC; an offset converts. - `runs_today` (integer, min 0, max 100000): Runs of this job already started today (UTC day). - `spend_today` (number, min 0, max 1000000000000): What this job has spent today (UTC day), in the file's currency. - `spend_month` (number, min 0, max 1000000000000): What this job has spent this calendar month (UTC), in the file's currency. - `consecutive_failures` (integer, min 0, max 100000): Runs in a row that failed after all their retries; 0 after a run succeeds. - `last_run_at` (string): When the last run of this job started (UTC). Leave out before the first run. - `next_step` (string): The step about to run: its number, its text or the start of it. Leave out at the start of a run. - `failure_limit` (integer, min 1, max 100): Failed runs in a row that stop the job (your failure_limit setting). Default 3. - `review_interval_days` (integer, min 1, max 3650): A last_reviewed older than this stops the run. Default 90. - `quiet_start_hour` (integer, min 0, max 23): Quiet hours start (UTC hour). With quiet_end_hour, a job that writes holds inside them. - `quiet_end_hour` (integer, min 0, max 23): Quiet hours end (UTC hour, excluded). - `max_runs_per_day` (integer, min 1, max 100000): Most runs a day for one job; one more holds until 00:00 UTC. - `approval_over` (number, min 0, max 1000000000): Your approval amount: a run whose worst case is above it holds for a yes. - `writes_need_approval` (string, one of any | external | none): Your rule for the check of the section: any, external (default) or none. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/preflight_run` with `{"content":"format: automation/1\nowner: billing-team\ncurrency: USD\n## invoice-reminders\ntrigger: cron 0 14 * * mon-fri\nsteps: read overdue invoices; draft one reminder per customer; send the reminders\nscope: read invoices; write drafts, outbox\napproval: before send the reminders\nbudget: 0.50 per run, 1 per day, 12 per month\nretries: 1, backoff 10m fixed\ntimeout: 15m\nstatus: on\nlast_reviewed: 2026-10-01","job":"invoice-reminders","now":"2026-10-23T14:00:00Z","spend_month":9.5,"last_run_at":"2026-10-22T14:00:02Z","next_step":"3","quiet_start_hour":22,"quiet_end_hour":6}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/preflight_run?content=format%3A+automation%2F1%0Aowner%3A+billing-team%0Acurrency%3A+USD%0A%23%23+invoice-reminders%0Atrigger%3A+cron+0+14+*+*+mon-fri%0Asteps%3A+read+overdue+invoices%3B+draft+one+reminder+per+customer%3B+send+the+reminders%0Ascope%3A+read+invoices%3B+write+drafts%2C+outbox%0Aapproval%3A+before+send+the+reminders%0Abudget%3A+0.50+per+run%2C+1+per+day%2C+12+per+month%0Aretries%3A+1%2C+backoff+10m+fixed%0Atimeout%3A+15m%0Astatus%3A+on%0Alast_reviewed%3A+2026-10-01&job=invoice-reminders&now=2026-10-23T14%3A00%3A00Z&spend_month=9.5&last_run_at=2026-10-22T14%3A00%3A02Z&next_step=3&quiet_start_hour=22&quiet_end_hour=6`. ### automation_starter: Get a starter AUTOMATION.md file Serves five ready AUTOMATION.md files for common unattended jobs: daily-report (read only, on a schedule, with a budget), inbox-triage (labels and drafts, sends wait for a yes before the send step), nightly-sync (writes, with capped retries, backoff and a timeout), invoice-reminders (a spend cap per run, day and month, a time outside quiet hours, contact limits, a yes before the send), alert-watch (an event trigger, min_gap as the rate limit, escalation that waits for a yes). Each is a complete file with one job in status draft and a note on when to use it and what to change; the result includes its jobs and the check_automation result under the default rules (no errors). Without kind it lists them. Names and amounts are made up; it runs, schedules and approves nothing. - `kind` (string, one of daily-report | inbox-triage | nightly-sync | invoice-reminders | alert-watch): Which starter: daily-report (read only, on a schedule, with a budget), inbox-triage (labels and drafts, sends wait for a yes before the send step), nightly-sync (writes, with capped retries, backoff and a timeout), invoice-reminders (a spend cap per run, day and month, a time outside quiet hours, contact limits, a yes before the send), alert-watch (an event trigger, min_gap as the rate limit, escalation that waits for a yes). Leave it out for the list. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/automation_starter` with `{"kind":"inbox-triage"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/automation_starter?kind=inbox-triage`. ### parse_automation: Parse an AUTOMATION.md file to JSON Reads an AUTOMATION.md file (sent as a string) with the same parser the other tools use and returns its canonical JSON: the header, then every job sorted by name with its trigger, steps (in order, each with the class of its first listed verb), scope (sorted), approval (with the gated step's number), budget (per run, per day, per month and currency), retries, timeout, min_gap, owner, status, last_reviewed and the line of each key, plus the values it could not read and a fingerprint that stays the same when only the order or layout changes. Every field is described in fields. It judges nothing: check_automation does that. - `content` (string, required): The whole AUTOMATION.md file as text. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/parse_automation` with `{"content":"format: automation/1\nowner: ops-team\ncurrency: USD\n## refund-sweep\ntrigger: every 5 minutes\nsteps: list refund requests; refund each approved request; email the customer\nscope: read refunds; write payments, email\napproval: none\nbudget: 2 per run, 50 per month\nretries: unlimited\nstatus: on\nlast_reviewed: 2026-03-01"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/parse_automation?content=format%3A+automation%2F1%0Aowner%3A+ops-team%0Acurrency%3A+USD%0A%23%23+refund-sweep%0Atrigger%3A+every+5+minutes%0Asteps%3A+list+refund+requests%3B+refund+each+approved+request%3B+email+the+customer%0Ascope%3A+read+refunds%3B+write+payments%2C+email%0Aapproval%3A+none%0Abudget%3A+2+per+run%2C+50+per+month%0Aretries%3A+unlimited%0Astatus%3A+on%0Alast_reviewed%3A+2026-03-01`. ### schedule_math: Run times, counts and overlaps from a schedule Turns a cron expression or an interval (as written in the file's trigger line) plus a runtime into the next N run times in UTC, runs per day and per 30 days, the smallest gap between runs, and whether runs overlap (runtime longer than the gap) and how many can be in flight at once. Intervals are counted from 00:00 UTC on the start date. Pure calendar arithmetic; it schedules nothing. - `trigger` (string, required): The trigger line: "cron 0 6 * * *", "*/20 6-18 * * 1-5" or "every 15 minutes". Event triggers have no schedule. - `runtime` (string): How long one run takes: a duration such as "25m", "1h30m" or "90s", or a plain number of minutes. Default 10m. - `from` (string): Start instant: a date (midnight UTC) or a time such as 2026-10-22T08:00:00Z; a time with no offset is read as UTC. Runs strictly after it are listed. Default: now. - `count` (integer, min 1, max 100): How many run times to list. Default 10. - `timeout` (string): The job's timeout, such as "15m"; checked against the gap too. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/schedule_math` with `{"trigger":"cron */20 6-18 * * 1-5","runtime":"25m","from":"2026-10-22T08:00:00Z","count":6,"timeout":"30m"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/schedule_math?trigger=cron+*%2F20+6-18+*+*+1-5&runtime=25m&from=2026-10-22T08%3A00%3A00Z&count=6&timeout=30m`. ### run_budget: A month of runs with retries against a budget Runs per month times cost per run, with retries and a failure rate per attempt, against the monthly budget: the expected and worst-case monthly cost, what is left, the run and the day on which the budget runs out, how many runs still fail after all retries, and what one more retry would add. Every number comes from the request; it reads no bills and spends nothing. - `runs_per_month` (number, min 0, max 1000000000, required): Scheduled runs in the month (schedule_math gives runs_per_month for a cron or interval). - `cost_per_run` (number, min 0, max 1000000000, required): Cost of one successful attempt, in the file's currency. - `retries` (integer, min 0, max 100): Retries after a failed attempt. Default 0. - `failure_rate` (number, min 0, max 100): Share of attempts that fail, 0 to 1 (values above 1 are read as a percent). Default 0. - `monthly_budget` (number, min 0, max 1000000000000, required): The per-month budget for this job. - `failed_attempt_cost` (number, min 0, max 1000000000): Cost of a failed attempt. Default: the same as cost_per_run. - `days_in_month` (integer, min 28, max 31): Days in the month, to turn the run that goes over into a day. Default 30. - `currency` (string): A three-letter code, used only to label the result. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/run_budget` with `{"runs_per_month":720,"cost_per_run":0.05,"retries":2,"failure_rate":0.1,"monthly_budget":30,"currency":"USD"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/run_budget?runs_per_month=720&cost_per_run=0.05&retries=2&failure_rate=0.1&monthly_budget=30¤cy=USD`. ### blast_radius: Exposure of a job, and the step to gate From a job's steps, scope and approval line (as written in the file), a 0 to 100 exposure number with its formula: points per step by what its verbs do (read, write, send, spend, delete), less what an approval gates, scaled by how many write targets there are and whether any looks sensitive. Names the step to gate (the first unattended step that sends, spends or deletes) and the exposure if it were. A reading of the text, not a safety assessment. - `steps` (string, required): The ordered steps, separated by semicolons or line breaks: "pull orders; build the summary; send the summary". - `scope` (string): "read a, b; write c, d" or none. - `approval` (string): none, "before " or "over ". - `budget_per_run` (number, min 0, max 1000000000): The per-run budget, so "over " can be read against it. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/blast_radius` with `{"steps":"pull yesterday's orders; build the summary; send the summary to the ops channel","scope":"read orders, metrics; write reports","approval":"none"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/blast_radius?steps=pull+yesterday%27s+orders%3B+build+the+summary%3B+send+the+summary+to+the+ops+channel&scope=read+orders%2C+metrics%3B+write+reports&approval=none`. ### automation_template: A ready AUTOMATION.md file Builds a complete AUTOMATION.md file for one job from a few arguments: name, owner, trigger, steps and scope, with a budget, retries, backoff, timeout and status. The approval line defaults to a gate before the first step that sends, spends or deletes, and the per-month budget to the per-run budget times the runs in the next 30 days. The file is linted before it is returned. It writes text only; it saves, schedules and runs nothing. - `name` (string, required): The job's name, such as "nightly-report". - `owner` (string, required): Who answers for the job: a person or team name. - `trigger` (string, required): "cron 0 6 * * *", "every 15 minutes" or "on order.created". - `steps` (string, required): The ordered steps, separated by semicolons or line breaks. - `scope` (string): "read a, b; write c" or none. - `approval` (string): none, "before " or "over ". Default: before the first step that sends, spends or deletes, else none. - `budget_per_run` (number, min 0, max 1000000000): Budget per run in the file's currency. Default 0. - `budget_per_month` (number, min 0, max 1000000000000): Budget per month. Default: budget_per_run x runs in the next 30 days. - `currency` (string): Three-letter code the file states for every amount. Default USD. - `retries` (integer, min 0, max 20): Retries per run. Default 2. - `backoff` (string): Backoff between retries, such as "30s" or "5m". Default 5m. - `backoff_kind` (string, one of fixed | linear | exponential): How the backoff grows. Default exponential. - `timeout` (string): Timeout per run, such as "15m". Default 15m. - `status` (string, one of on | paused | draft): on, paused or draft. Default draft: turn it on after the person says yes. - `today` (string): The date written as updated and last_reviewed. Default: today. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/automation_template` with `{"name":"nightly-report","owner":"ops-team","trigger":"cron 0 6 * * *","steps":"pull yesterday's orders; build the summary; send the summary to the ops channel","scope":"read orders, metrics; write reports","budget_per_run":0.4,"currency":"USD","today":"2026-10-22"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/automation_template?name=nightly-report&owner=ops-team&trigger=cron+0+6+*+*+*&steps=pull+yesterday%27s+orders%3B+build+the+summary%3B+send+the+summary+to+the+ops+channel&scope=read+orders%2C+metrics%3B+write+reports&budget_per_run=0.4¤cy=USD&today=2026-10-22`. ### whats_new: What's new here, and what's next What changed on automation.md and when, what is being built, when to check back, and the other .md sites. Pass since (a date) to get only newer entries, for example the updated date of the skill you have. Reads a list kept with the code; fetches nothing and stores nothing. - `since` (string): Only entries after this date (YYYY-MM-DD). - `planned` (boolean): Include what is being built and the ideas being weighed. Default true. Example: `POST https://automation.md/api/v1/whats_new` with `{"since":"2026-10-01"}`, or `GET https://automation.md/api/v1/whats_new?since=2026-10-01`. ### build_settings: Write your settings into the skill Takes `preset` plus any setting below, and `format` (section or skill). Returns the sections, the settings as JSON, a skill link and an install line. Settings an agent drafted count only after the person says yes: show them to the person first, and follow them only once they agree. ## Settings Numbers or fixed choices only. `unset` clears an optional setting.
